Behavioural and biochemical responses of two marine invertebrates Scrobicularia plana and Hediste diversicolor to copper oxide nanoparticles ArchiMer

Engineered nano-sized Cu oxide particles are extensively used in diverse applications. Because aquatic environments are the ultimate "sink" for all contaminants, it is expected that nanoparticles (NP) will follow the same fate. In this study, two marine invertebrates Scrobicularia plana and Hediste diversicolor were chosen as ecotoxicological models. The aim was to evaluate behavioural (burrowing kinetics, feeding rate) and biochemical (biomarkers) responses of S. plana and H. diversicolor exposed in the laboratory to Cu (10 mu g L(-1)) added in natural seawater either in the form of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) of CuO or as dissolved Cu in 2% HNO(3). Exposure was characterized by considering (i) the physico-chemical fate of NP (ii) the fraction of...

Ecological and biological factors controlling the concentrations of trace elements (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Se, Zn) in delphinids Globicephala melas from the North Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Caurant, Florence; Amiard, Jean-claude; Amiard-triquet, Claude; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
Trace elements (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Se and Zn) were determined in liver and kidney of pilot whales Globicephala melas Traill, 1809 collected from 7 schools caught at different seasons around the Faroe Islands. These and other biological data at our disposal enabled us to confirm and to define more accurately the relations shown previously between age, sex and trace element concentrations in marine mammals. The most striking features were: (1) the elevated levels of Cd and Hg in pilot whales compared to other marine mammals and to minimum adverse-effect levels established for humans; (2) the biocumulative behaviour of Cd and Hg; (3) the high correlations between Hg and Se, predominantly influenced by age; and (4) the high correlations between Cd and Zn, the...

ArchiMer
Poisson, Emeline; Fisson, Cédric; Amiard-triquet, Claude; Burgeot, Thierry; Couteau, Jérôme; Dur, Gael; Durand, Fabrice; Forget-leray, Joelle; Letendre, Julie; Souissi, Sami; Xuereb, Benoit.

Andersen, A.; Amiard, Jean-claude; Amiard-triquet, Claude; Ferrand, R.; L'Hermite, A.; Metayer, C..

Amiard-triquet, Claude; Burgeot, Thierry; Claisse, Didier.
Monitoring of marine environment quality can be based on chemical analysis of contaminants in the major components of the environment: seawater, sediment, biota. The respective interest of these different matrices is discussed and the fundamentals for the use of bivalves in the international Mussel Watch are presented. The objectives of the French RNO are 1) to assess the levels and trends of contaminants; 2) to assess the biological effects of contaminants. Analysis of the chemicals in biota is an indispensable complement to the biological approach, allowing their bioavailable fraction to be quantified. However, only a fraction of xenobiotics incorporated in living beings is biologically active and can exert a noxious effect on the biota. In addition,...
